Season 2 begins!

Good first game, everyone. We had to fight hard in the first half playing with one team member down, but once we got our full roster, I think we managed to hit back quite well. 21-7 was the final score (after being held scoreless in the first half). I’m look forward to this season ahead!

Some thoughts on the game…

Katie – was the key playmaker for us in the middle. Ran hard the whole game and was always calling for the ball. Was fantastic as a receiver on center breaks, which allowed us to get the ball into the attack zone very quickly.

Huong – fantastic first game for us! Was willing to play as shooter to start off with, then switched to wing defense and offered lots of leads for passing to in the middle. Didn’t rush with the passing either, and picked out good options to pass to.

Carol – spent most of the night as goal keeper and held the shooter in check. Worked well with Drew and was onto the loose balls very quickly. Switched out to Wing attack in the last quarter and gave us some fresh legs in the middle!

Julie – made lightning quick leads in the circle when the ball came down to attack to take advantage of small passes from outside the circle. Then converted that good work into goals for us – Yea!

Drew – Really making the goal defense his own position. Had a great duel with the big goal attack who was a focal point and had lots of balls thrown to him, but Drew was able to spoil or intercept quite a few!

Scott – Came into the game with little sleep (because of soccer!) and still had the energy to play center and do all that running! How does he do it?! Was especially good in slowing down the play on opposition attacks, allowing us to get numbers back.

Eddie – always a danger for us in goal attack, sneaking in and out to receive ball feeds and threatening on each attack. Covers the half forward area very well, allowing our shooter to play from the attack circle.

In the lead-up to the finals series, the team has put together some words of thanks and encouragement to our brilliant coach and captain, Brian.

Eddie

Thanks to Brian for diligently sending pre-match reminders, post-match reports and even individual-writeups. At this rate, I'm going to be expecting a customised highlights video after next season's games. Also (since Brian is too bloody modest), just wanted to point out that Brian too has been in every single victory (so he's either that good, or he has been scoping out the opposition and rigging which games he plays).

Scott

Brian's been a great driving force for the team, not only on the court, but in the way he has managed and coached us off the court as well. He's especially great at providing motivation by sending emails and posting blog messages to get everyone pumped up and highlighting everyone's achievements. His coaching during the couple of training sessions that we've had has also been great, coming up with some creative and productive drills which I think have really helped us to work better as individual players and together as a cohesive team. He's tops! Well done, Brian!

Katie

Brian, you did an awesome job as centre last week! =) ...running everywhere and positioning yourself away from your opponent so that you were free to accept passes. Thanks also for your encouragement on the court... even when my efforts don't result in a turnover or anything... I can always count on hearing you yell "good try!" to keep me going through the game. And your end-of-game team encouragement was much appreciated! You're doing a fantastic job as captain -- from the drills at training to the weekly individual encouragements on the blog... it's a lot of work & time behind the scenes -- Thank you! =)

I think we all appreciate how much enthusiasm and effort Brian has put into the team & also the way Julie and Brian make such a good combo in the goals.

Mandy

Thank you Brian for being our tireless captain - no task is too great or too small for you. Thanks for handling the administrative side of things, setting up the blog with encouraging comments for everyone every single week, organising training and social get togethers. It has been an amazing season of growth for our team...from being absolutely thrashed in our first games to winning some convincing games...much of this we owe to you for your dedication and encouragement throughout this season...morale and team spirit is high. I should also mention that you are shaping up to be a force to be reckoned with and a star shooter. It really is amazing watching you and Jules shooting for our team -- you hardly ever miss!!! I look forward to another season playing this communist sport with you. ;)

Chargin' up the ladder

A good solid win, everyone. Well done! As one of our team members so eloquently put it, we’re ‘charging’ up the ladder! =)

Anita – Played wide whilst in the middle and we were able to get lots of easy balls to her. Played the last quarter in the shooter circle and convicingly outplayed that very feisty goal-keeper.

Mandy – was a solid presence in the middle for us. Matched and kept up with the other team’s center (who was very good). Was also a great source of verbal encouragement to the rest of the team.

Katie – Was consistently avaliable to bring the ball down the corridor, then was consistently available again to take the ball round the attack circle (whilst I, the goal attack, lumbers after her to get into position).

Julie – our shooter finally got a run out of the circle (but still ended up in in out of habit). Still shot in the majority of our goals, and had to deal with a very feisty goal keeper.

Mel – Our lucky charm who’s been in all the games we’ve won! Another impressive defensive effort, chasing down a lot of loose balls and sticking close to the opponent.

Ken – played both attack and defense and adapted to both. Made sure to exploit the fact that we had an extra man by double-teaming the other side and making their plays difficult.

PP – Gave lots of run playing in wing defense forr the ball to be brought out – ran hard to make himself avaliable for passes. Like Drew, was committed to jumping around and trying to spoil opposition passes.

Drew – was a great roaming defender for us in the backline. Covered lots of ground and made lots of intercepts. Committed to making lots of defensive jumps, even when it meant taking a few heavy falls.

Eddie – played a bit for us in attack and got in a couple of goals! Worked in tandem with Anita in the second quarter, passing from one side of the field to the other to get the ball into attack.

4th by Technicality

I thought we played well on Tuesday despite going down 25-14. The other team had some experienced players, and we did well to match them as we did. We got away with a bonus point, and if you check the ladder, we are now (technically) 4^th, given that one team above us is ‘unfinancial’. We’re doing well everyone, keep it up!

Katie – was zipping in and out, here and there whilst playing in the midfield and then adopted to defense in the last quarter to thwart opposition attacks. Seems to have lots of time when she’s got the ball by the way she calmly spots players and passes the ball

Julie – had to play hard to slip past the tough defense but managed to do so and helpp us net over 10 goals (which means we get bonus points!). Continues to be double-teamed but still comes thru.

Mandy – was able to make good cruicial centre breaks for us whilst playing in center and set up a lot of our forward thrusts. Teamed up well with Julie around the circle to get the ball into good shooting positions and into goal

Anita – A typically solid game. Never seems to tire and just keeps running from one end to the other. Dishes off passes quickly and accurately, and one of the reasons why our attacking are coming off much better these days!

Carol – Had to fend a lot of fast breaks from the oppotsition team on Tuesday night and really did well to keep on the goal shooter and restrict how much ball she got. Never let the opponents get easy shot on goal. Oh, and won a face-off too!

Drew – Top job in defense. Made many timely intercepts and also slapped the ball away many times when the opposition were making shots! Was continually encouraging and clapping on the team, whether on the field or off it.

Eddie – played in goal attack for the game and was a great partner with Jules up forward. Had to adopt to a different game playing more out of the shooting circle than usual but did well, moving back and forth quickly and continually.

Scott – Played in wing defense and was a ball of energy. Ran forward to make himself available for passes from defense to attack (being the middle link), and ran equally hard back onto his oppoisite number when the other team had the ball.

5 Things

Hope you’re all still smiles from our 2^nd victory of the season – I know I am! Have 5 things to mention:

1. Well done again for Tuesday where we won 18-12! Thoughts on the game on the entry below.

2. The fixture for the rest of the season (as well as the guy’s roster) is up now. Note that the next game is on at 7pm next Tuesday (25/4)

3. There will be a short training session this Sunday (23/4) at 12:30pm. Just go straight to our regular training ground (St Cecilias School, Hillside Pde, Camberwell). Others outside the team are welcome to come along and play too!

4. Thought we should celebrate our recent victories with dinner/drinks after the game next Tuesday! Can we all keep it free? If the majority of people are there, I’m happy to fund a round of drinks from the team fund (We have just a little leftover).

Apologies for not posting for the previous week – I got to the game late because of traffic and missed half of it, and I was also distracted by the Easter weekend. Suffice to say it was a very scrappy game in which we lost 9-35, but that’s pretty good considering we started the game off with only 5 people on the field!

That’s last week though, this week we’ve turned things around and come out winners 18-12! It was a pretty gutsy win – they had some tall timbers on their side, but we were able to beat them with our good running & passing game. Well done to everyone who played – you all made great contributions throughout the game!

Here are some thoughts:

Mel – has played for us twice now and both times we have won! Is she the secret weapon? Played a great game as goal keeper in the second half and works beautifully with Ken in defense to deny the other team from scoring.

Ken – Played on the big guy and did some great work pressuring and worrying him out of it. Used the ‘slap and scramble’ to great effect and spoiled many an attack. Even the opposition mentioned how good a defensive leap he has.

Carol – came to the game on a last minute call up and did wonderfully well defending the goals in the first half. Shut the female shooter out of the game and also ran out and collected many a loose ball in the defensive third. Great job!

Katie – started as the centre in the game and consistently gave good run the midfield. Played steadily and was like a rock-solid pillar in the middle of the ground. Seemed to always be the first to line up round the forward or defensive circle each time.

Mandy – still came despite a toe that’s still on the mend and provided plenty of drive into attack. Able to read the play really way and therefore positions herself very well, and espcially on turnovers is able to take full advanatage and make great counter-attacks.

Scott – Was Mr Versatility thru the night, playing in a variety of positions and did really well in all. Stuck to his opposite nu mber and got himself into the front position on defense to make it hard for the opposition to get the ball.

Eddie – a great partner to Julie in goal attack. Presents himself to the midfielders very well when we go into attack, allowing Julie to stay in the goal square to get the quick receives. Saw many a Mandy to Eddie, back to Mandy, to Julie attack sequence.

Julie – our star shooter continues to get them into the net. Helped us get to a season high score of 18… confidence was high as she got some really good shots in from far away. Helps lifts the confidence of the whole team with her shooting!

Anita – got awarded MVP for the game and deservedly so. Ran hard and fast the entire game and dished out some great passes from midfield into attack (not just the first one that presented itself). Played a great defensive game as well on the opposite center, reducing her effectiveness.

Re-charged Chargers

Hopefully everyone's re-charged after the festivities of the Easter long weekend, maybe after a chocolate egg or two, and ready to go for another game tonight. This one's a late one, but from all accounts, we're on the up-and-up. Who knows, maybe we can catch the opposition napping? See you there!

Woot! A Win!

After 6 rounds, 2 training sessions, many fouls and injuries – we won! Fantastic effort Chargers! Still finding it hard to believe that we did it – I must admit, I was very nervous in the last 3 minutes and was just willing the clock to go down….

But we did it, and let me just say it was a wonderful team effort! The win was a culmination of everyone’s dedication and effort in the past 6 weeks, constantly striving to improve, staying upbeat and encouraging one another….. and hopefully had fun whilst doing it. Well done everyone!

Thoughts on the game:

Scott – played a great game on Wing Defense. Made some really good interceptions early in the game which I think inspired the rest of the team. Used the ball well when he had it and was just super consistent throughout.

Mel – awesome job defending with Ken in the second half, putting lots of pressure on the opposition forwards and made good spoils, as well as worrying the opposition off the ball on receives. Slotted in really well on her first game!

Ken – top notch defensive effort, especially in the last quarter when the opposition got lots of ball into the attacking third. Didn’t give the shooter/s much to work with at all. Made some desperate lunges for the ball – good work!

Julie – another fantastic shooting effort, despite the fact that the opposition were trying to double team her and take her out of the play. Made some critical shots, evening netting some from far away! Wonderful shooting.

Katie – made use of the extra space on the larger court and kept presenting herself as an option to pass to. Teamed up with Mandy really well in the first half to run thru the corridor and feed the ball into the forward circle

Mandy – our midfield general, directing the play and making sure the opposition didn’t get easy balls down the midfield. Reads the play very well and is often one step ahead of where the play is actually at. Showed great endurance.

Anita – started as goal-keeper and repelled a lot of early attacks (until we found our groove and stopped turning over the ball), then stepped into the midfield at the end and gave us plenty of run! Makes great passes with the ball.

Drew – did great up forward in goal attack. Was a great foil for Julie and did some clever thing in the shooting circle to ensure we got good shots (even got a few in himself, I think). Steadied the team in the middle in the last quarter.

Pete & Justin – special mention goes to these guys for coming out and supporting us. The cheers and clapping had a definite effect on us, and the encouragement helped us to hang on at the end. Thanks heaps!

Proud...

Brilliant game guys! Our first half was fantastic and really showed what we could do as a team. We intercepted, spoiled, passed smartly, infringed less, attacked and shot well – it was great to see! The most pleasing thing though, was seeing people running well into space on attack and getting the in front on defense. Our good positioning really put the pressure back on the opposition. Awesome job everyone – we were so on top and in control in the first half. Well done!

As for our next training session, after speaking to a few people it seems like after Easter is going to be more suitable….how about we tentatively set it for Sunday 23^rd April 2pm. Mark it down in your dairies (or let me know if it’s not good for you)

Thoughts on the game:

Julie – our star shooter keeps putting them thru the hoops! moved all over the forward line to receive feeds and shot beautifully. Was even better considering the really good goal-keeper playing on her (hand in face!)

Mandy – back from injury and played a great game on center and wing! Always finding space when the ball was going forward and gave lots of feed to the shooters. Great passing as center in the breaks to start play for our team.

Katie – played wing defense and took control of the defensive side of midfield. A speedster as always and was great in pouncing on those loose balls from spoils and intercepts and passing it on for us to attack.

Anita – what a star for us as goal keeper! Gave very little for the goal shooter to work with and made lots of intercepts and spoils. Shot quick passes to start the counterattack down the other end. Really glad you’re on board!

Carol – Our stalwart defender again did a fantastic job, getting those vital intercepts and making the forwards run out wide for passes. Amongst the most consistent on the team and as far as I know, was not fouled for anything!

Drew – Gave us fresh legs in the last quarter and ran lots of balls out of defense. Played smart and used the ball well when he had it. Was a great encourager and supporter off the field too. It certainly helped heaps!

PP – Shot his first goal last Tuesday – a latent talent waiting to come out? Has apparently been practicing his shooting as of late. Apart from the shooting for goal, was also moving well on the field and making space.

Scott – played great in defense and used his height to advantage for gathers and intercepts. Made sure to get front position under the ring when possible to get the rebound for us. Played a really focused game

Eddie - Provided a constant presence for us in the middle to allow for linking from defense into the forward line. Provided really good support to Julie when playing in Goal attack, allowing us to get close and good shots on goal.

A special mention to Andrew (Yuen) for coming out to watch and support us. Thanks!

Getting there...

I personally had a great time on Tuesday night. It was our best game yet and we scored our highest score ever (7 goals). There were a lot more feeds down to our forward line, and even though the opposition scored a lot more (45!), this told me that the game was played more freely, with less stoppages from us for fouling etc. Seriously, we improved heaps, and once we learn to address the 1-2 things that the opposition is doing that we’re not, we’re going to be really competitive.

Vanessa – played well on Wing defense and was very reliable in manning up and defending up. Took a lot of the penalty passes for us and got them off neatly and quickly. Learning by leaps and bounds with each game!

Eddie – plays the game in good spirits and with a smile (as it should be!). Has good vision and spots well for open players. Very good at bringing the ball out of defense and into the forward line. Used every ounce of energy in the game!

Ken – played both attack and defense for the night and ran hard throughout, providing leads on attack and sticking close to his opposite number on defense. Would have to say you’re probably the best one on our team at getting into good defensive position.

Drew – Was an eager energetic presence on the field! Teamed up well again with Jules in the scoring circle and was unselfish multiple times, passing off to the shooter for the better positioned shot…. played hard, to the point where he took a ball in the face from a fellow teammate ;)

Katie – played fantastic game on Wing attack. Gave leads everywhere, often doubling back or zigzaging to find space. Gave great support from the edge of the circle to the shooters. Made a fantastic play in the 3^rd quarter when she came out of nowhere to spoil a pass.

Julie – our goal shooter got a lot more feed this game and made use of them, despite tough (and bordering on illegal ) defense. Played smart and often passed out of the circle, got in a better position and re-took the ball for the shot.

Carol – filled in for us at the last minute and played tops in goal-keeper role. Made lots of intercepts at the last line of defense, or otherwise was making the opposition earn the ball before they could take a shot. Thanks again for coming in at the last minute!

Kudos to Mandy & Matt for coming out to support us for a 10:20 game. Both of you are ace!

Count the Positives

We may have lost 2-32 on Tuesday night but I did think we’ve improved from the previous games. There were a lot of positives to be taken out from the game. It was great to have Drew join our team and provide that tall option we’ve been craving. There were some great chain passing, which saw us bring the ball from defense to the forward line in little time (and gives me a glimpse into our potential as a team)! We’re also fouling a lot less than we were previously, which is great!

Thoughts on the game:

Katie – great to have back on the field after missing thru injury! Roamed the corridor and worked well in tandem with Mandy and other midfielders to pass and receive. Able to maintain great balance on receives and play bal quickly.

Mandy – our playmaker in the middle. Always looked to generate play and move the ball quickly along the corridor. Quick passes would be followed up by quick positioning to be ready to receive again.

Rowena – played most of the night on Wing Defense and did a great job. Adapted to on the field very quickly and blended into the team’s play. Was involved in some of the great chain-passing down the field. Thanks for playing!

Julie – Always presented a lead when the ball came down into the forward line, so that when the ball did come down the forward third, it would most of the time end up in the scoring circle. Drew and Julie make a great forward combination!

Carol – continues to work tirelessly. Hopefully down the track we can give you less work! Made some very good intercepts and set up some good runs from defense with her passing. Kept smiling and upbeat thru the game – great to see!

Ken – spent more time in defense this time and played just as well. Grew in confidence as the game went on, managing to get into the front position and spoil his opposite number. Ran hard the whole game.

Peter – put himself on the line in defense (typified by his dive for the ball in the 3^rd quarter and getting hit by the opposition team). Had a go at swatting all the balls that came down his way (and there were a lot)

Scott – covered a lot of ground in the middle and seems to thrive in the thick of the action, following the ball where it went. Had a tight tussle with his opposite number all night, switching back and forth between attack and defense. Well played.

Drew – his first game and got right in! Gave us a tall option up forward and troubled the opponents from the start. Unselfish in giving the ball off to others to try for a better shooting position.

Netball = Most Communist Sport Ever

Well played yesterday in game 2, everyone. I thought we improved a lot on last week – ran and played the ball much better – the other team though were a very good defensive unit and we had tough refereeing which didn’t help.

One thing I have noticed out of all this is that netball is THE most team-oriented sport I have ever played. You really have to work together and support each other to get anywhere. There’s no such thing as a star player who’s able to dominate and turn the game – cos when you get your hands on the ball, you have to stay still….hence my comment re: netball = most communist sport ever.

What that tells me is that the more we play as a team and gel together, the better we’re going to get – we’ll understand what out teammates are thinking, what their preferences are and what anticipate how they’ll play the ball. It was great that you guys suggested training for this Sunday (1:30pm at South Camberwell Uniting Church), cos it’ll give us more chance to do that!

Some thoughts on the game:

Scott – was a ball of energy and contributed heaps thru 4 quarters in the center. Every time play was to start back in the center; he’d grab the ball and run it back into the middle to start play. That’s what we want to see!

Carol – threw herself in defense and made a contest every time the ball came down that way. Played hard and physical – this was evident in all the contact calls for and against our team down there. Thanks for holding down that position!

Bex – was able to get away from her opponent numerous times and slotted thru the first couple of goals to get us going. Moved between forward and midfield quickly and effectively. Was very encouraging on the field too which was ace!

Mandy – really presented herself in the midfield. Got in the front position and always looked to move the play on quickly and into the forward line. Has an eye for finding free space and was still running strong at the end.

Julie – our team sharpshooter, came out and gave the lead going into the forward line, then zipped back into the half circle quickly to try and take the catch and get the shot off. Partnered well with Bex in the attack zone.

Eddie – came on at half time and certainly mad e a presence. Was like a mini kangaroo springing back and forth between midfield and defense, chasing hard after the ball and affected some great spoils. Awarded MVP by the refs.

Vanessa – picked up the game really quickly. Was active and busy in the middle, receiving throws and getting off good passes down the line. Is versatile to be able to play a variety of positions – whether up front or down back.

To Ken, Pete, PP and Katie… we missed having you on the field. Can’t wait for you guys to join us next round!

Charger's First Game

For a first up game guys, we did really well. Thanks to everyone for coming on time and being so enthusiastic! Even though we went down 23-5, we can hold our heads high with many of us not having played before. Wasn’t it a great moment when we scored our first few goals – and we had the subs to cheer it too ;)

Here’s what I observed from the game:

Julie – played a great game in attack, moving the ball around quickly and got us going with the first few goals! Judged MVP by the refs for this game!

Mandy – took no time to get into the game and really took it to the other team. Whenever there were multiple hands fighting for a ball, it seemed like one always belonged to hers! Belongs in the midfield!

Grace – was a sensational busy bee for us in the center, running everywhere it seemed. Gave some great quick runs down the corridor to move the ball forward quickly and effected some great opportunity for the shooters.

Katie – gave great service in middle/defense. Fed the runners with quality ball passes and then stuck close onto her opposite number when the other team was on attack. Hope you recover from injury super quick! You’re much needed!

Carol – did an ace job on Goal Defense. Played consistently over four quarters and was competitive throughout. Made some great scrabbles for the ball in the last line of defense, whether it was getting low to get a spilled ball or jumping for a contest.

Eddie – Played thru the first half in attack and played really well with Julie in the latter portions to move the ball around in the scoring circle and set up those first few goals. Really good at doing those ‘bouncing passes’

PP – played in attack to start with but seemed to excel after going to defense. Provided some timely interceptions and block and actually put some great pressure on the shooters (something I wasn’t able to do ;)

Scott – Had the job on the BIG goal shooter for the night and did the job really well, considering how much ball was going down there! Threw some nice sharp passes out of the D – can’t wait to see how you play in other positions and see how you do!

Ken – the man who didn’t want to play in attack and shoot for goal, yet netted 2 of them for our team! I see hidden potential that we’re going to harness. Ran hard to get into good position numerous times. Good job!

Peter L – provided the extra man for us in the second half, and placed himself in good positions for receives. Gave off good passes to the attack (particularly on free throws into the forward line) that allowed us to set up for a shot at goal.

2 days to game!

2 days to go until our first game! We had a good little training session today, where we went over the rules and practiced different plays. I think quite a few of us discovered just how frenetic the pace really is in netball. Quote of the day goes to Ken, ‘What have I gotten myself into?!’ =)

Just a few reminders:

Game is starting 7pm this Tuesday. It’d really be great if everyone could get there by 6:30pm so we can prepare, talk about who’s playing what position, and perhaps get to watch other teams play and learn from them.
Please bring a white T-shirt for the game. We’ll go white as a team. It doesn’t matter if the shirt has words or other colors on it, as long as 80% is white, it’ll be fine.
Remember to bring a drink… you may get thirsty! =)
Some of us are planning to go to Box Hill after the game for dinner – everyone is welcome to come along and join in!

4 people have joined onto the team since my last email – Ken, Peter L, Vanessa & Carol (Welcome guys!). That brings the total to 12 (though not everyone can play every week – some of us will be part time)…. Woohoo….. now we can have subs!

First Game - Tues 28/02/2006

Our first game is next Tuesday at 7pm at the Box Hill Indoor Sport Center (3/9 Clarice Road, Box Hill). Please get there 30 min early (6:30) for prep & signing in etc.

Oh, and in case you're unsure, you don't need to bring any uniform / netball bibs/ balls. It's all provided for. Just rock up in sporty attire!

Training Session on Sunday 26/02/2006

We’re organising a short training / explanation session slated for this Sunday at 2pm. We’ll go over some basics and run over the rules. We’ll meet in front of South Camberwell Uniting Church (Corner Toorak Road and Park Road, Camberwell) and head off from there.

Looking forward to what promises to be an ‘interesting’ season ahead… the majority of us have little or no experience with the game, but apparently if you can throw and catch a ball, you’re well on the way! Thank goodness we do have people who’ve played before – we’re looking to them (i.e. Anita, Julie, Katie) for guidance! And here’s hoping we have a lot of fun along the way.

That’s 8 so far, and I’m hoping of a core of 11 players – 6 girls and 5 guys (since there can only be a maximum of 3 guys on the field at a time). In the process of waiting back to hear from some other people and confirm their place.

Oh, and I’ve tentatively named our side ‘Chargers’ (even though there’s no touching, much less charging, involved in the game…hehe) and if everyone’s happy with that, we’ll stick with it.
